NY City Association of Central Service Professionals
Thanks for visiting the NY City Association for Central Service Professionals website. Our purpose is to communiate the latest news in the field and maintain our members and healthcare professionals informed.
Central Service technicians, also called central sterile technician or sterile processing technician, assist in preparing and processing surgical instruments under the supervision of the central service supervisor or other surgical personnel. Central service technicians are members of the materials management team but in many circumstances are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses. Before an operation, central service technicians help prepare what is needed in the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. They assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, as well as adjust and check it to ensure it is working properly. They are the first line of contamination prevention and ensure that surgical instruments are functioning properly. Central service technicians decontaminate, assemble, package and sterilize surgical instrument used on every surgical procedure. They operate sterilizers, testing equipment and washer decontaminators. They are responsible for ensuring proper functioning of the surgical instrumentation before they are packaged and ready for sterilization. Technicians also inventory and distribute disposable goods for nursing patient care. Some are also responsible for the care and maintenance of mobile patient equipment.
