I bought from aartech.ca and was happy overall.

Just be carefull to read what you’re buying. Many of the self monitored alarms have an all-in-one keypad/alarm center which require an AC plug in, which I don’t think you want by your door. Make sure to buy the wireless keypad if that’s what you want, then you can install the main panel in a secure area.

I bought the Skylink system with dialer, just installed this weekend and it seems decent enough.

Thanks for the lead. Is there any particular reason you went with the Skylink over GE or DSC? Is there an all-in bundle you’d recommend from aartech.ca?

I bought it a while ago so I don’t recall my reasoning exactly, but pretty sure it was mainly price. I don’t really believe an alarm system is going to protect my house, its more of a piece of mind and doing something is probably better than doing nothing. But if somebody really wants to steal your stuff, no alarm is going to stop them short of an armed guard or some elaborate expensive alarm system.

I bought the Skylink because it had the dialer, and I thought the dialer was the main panel. But it turns out the dialer panel (which looks the same) is just an add-on. My intent was to have the main unit put away in some other room. Right now I just used 2 sided tape to put the keychain FOB hidden in a closet, so when I leave the house I arm it with, then when I come home I disarm it the same way.
